Waiting and Preparing For a Hurricane

This is Pre-Isaac Sunset in Southwest Louisiana

We are thinking of all our neighboring Parishes and the Gulf Coast where Isaac has passed through.  Here in Lake Charles we are experiencing the calm before the storm on the outer bands of Tropical Storm Isaac here in Lake Charles LA.  This is a slow moving storm and many residents are doing some back porch sitting this evening enjoying the wind.

Watching the news of the flooding that has occurred in Mississippi and parts of Placquemine Parish in Louisiana are not the only damage that storms bring.  Hurricanes are not all about the storm surge of water, wind and flying debris can do severe damage.  This is why residents prepare their homes for Hurricanes and Tropical Storms.

The neighbor's trampoline suddenly becomes a flying projectile that can wind up in your yard!  Those pretty pots on the patio will roll around and break, you can also find that expensive patio furniture turned upside down and hopefully you remember to take that patio umbrella down or your table may have lift off!!

Be prepared and pick up anything outside that could take off with a gust a wind. Wind can be damaging and this is why we prepare for Hurricanes.

As I drove into my subdivision tonight  I saw this water oak tree at the entrance which is the first casualty of the wind.

This afternoon I snapped this photo of a Lake Charles subdivision where trees line the street.  You probably can't see the powerlines in this picture but they run right through the middle tree.   The danger with this when storms come are the falling limbs on the electrical lines which cause power outage. It is not the water that causes power outages it is the wind and gusts of up to 100mph wind that downs the power lines.

As a homeowner its important to keep your landscaping trimmed but don't limit that trimming to just the bushes. Be prepared in advance of any  storm.  Cut those tall branches that are leaning towards the roof or even worse the power lines!

Southwest Louisiana has a mixture of tropical palm trees and wooded acreage of oak and pine trees.  Lake Charles LA has many majestic 100 year old oak trees.    Seven years ago Southwest Louisiana saw the damages from wind and trees in the midst of Hurricane Rita which hit Southwest LA hard.

A Tree can split a house right down the middle.  The tall water oaks and pine trees snap like toothpicks.
