Neighborhood Watch Makes Homeowners Feel Safe in Lake Charles, LA

Neighborhood Watch Makes Homeowners Feel Safe

Does Your Subdivision have a Neighborhood Watch?

neighborhood watch

It is important to understand that a Neighborhood Watch is about "Neighbors watching out for Neighbors", it is not a policed program, but police will respond to a call reporting suspicious activity and investigate.

Summer is typically a vacation time of year when many residents may not be at home.  Never advertise that you are going out of town.  Let a trusted neighbor know so they can watch your home for any abnormal activity.

Canal Place Homeowners in Lake Charles, Louisiana, had Sgt. Craig Wright with the Lake Charles Police Department speak at a recent Homeowners Association Meeting.  Sgt. Wright is a Police Officer with Community Policing in Lake Charles

Sgt. Wright spoke to residents about several tips to put into effect for a Neighborhood Watch.  He pointed out that secluded subdivisions may give you privacy, but you are also hidden so your neighbors may not always be able to see any crime activity.

  • It is important to pay attention to suspicious vehicles entering and driving slowly.
  • Sgt. Wright said that South Lake Charles typically has lower crime.  Don Dixon Police Chief has a crackdown on crime and when the police force focuses in one particular area, the activity may just move to the next block.
  • Foot traffic with kids carrying backpacks can be very innocent however, beware of adults carrying backpacks where they can be hiding tools to break into your home.
  • Keep shrubs trimmed away from your doors and windows

Sgt. Wright reminded residents that with school out, many families will be vacationing this summer. It is a time when neighbors should keep an extra watch for the vacant homes.

Sgt. Wright  also announced that National Night Out will be held the 2nd Tuesday in August at Marilyn's Catering in Lake Charles, LA.  This is a national event held by community policing to promote citizen watch programs.

A representative from Kingdom Alarms in Lake Charles also spoke to Canal Place Homeowners (several residents already have Kingdom Alarm Service in place).

Kingdom Alarms

Kingdom Alarms offers the following:

  • Security Systems
  • Camera Systems
  • Surround Sound Systems

Residents were encouraged to arm their alarm systems every time they leave home even for quick trips to the store and especially during the day when residents are at work. If you have an alarm system that you are paying for and not using, you are wasting your money.  If you have it use it!

The newest systems being installed in homes are camera systems that record to a DVR.  This system allows the homeowner to monitor anywhere to check activity in their home.

Recorded video surveillance will hold up in a court of law and the technology today is so advanced investigators can view identities closely as well as view vehicles or license plates that may have been recorded.

Display your alarm sign where it can be seen clearly and not hidden by landscaping.  Use a few alarm stickers on your side and back windows which "warn" that your home is protected by alarm.
